Lascelles ‘Las’ May

Famed cartoonist Lascelles ‘Las’ May has been with The Gleaner Company for over 25 years; titillating readers with his hilarious and often thought provoking cartoons.

Las May was born in Trench Town and attended Trench Town High and from there he joined the Youth Service at the Ministry of Heath’s planning and evaluation unit where he did design work. Colleagues recommended the School of Art to him (now the Edna Manley College for the Visual and Performing Arts) which led to him starting his own screen printing business. The desire to do comics however was strong in May so he submitted his work to the Gleaner to popular acclaim.

Now, Las May enjoys fame as one of the leading political comics in the island and his cartoons have embedded themselves in a part of the Jamaican cultural psyche.
